Teachers in the test beam! ILC cavitiy testing and test beam life played a major role at a recent teacher training held at DESY. It was the first time that the German lab invited high school teachers for a week focused on particle physics.

Calorimeter prototypes have been taking showers at CERN – particle showers, that is. Detector developers have just packed up their equipment after finishing a campaign to understand the time structure of hadron showers. And they are happy with what they achieved. Find out how a beer chiller played a role in the test beam as well…

Summer breaks don't exist for detector prototypes. For almost three weeks in July – around the time that a new temperature record of 39.7 degrees was measured in Geneva – the team working on the technological prototype of a potential hadronic calorimeter for the ILD detector at the ILC took data at the Super Proton Synchrotron test beam at CERN.

An alternative technology for the ILD detector’s TPC tracker shows good results in a test beam at DESY. While the Large Hadron Collider saw its first circulating protons since many months, a detector technology for the time projection chamber of a future ILC detector saw some 1.5 million events in one week. Due to its specific technology, it probably has more channels than any other TPC so far.

Four consecutive generations of former DESY summer students had an unplanned reunion at CERN recently: they were all around for the test of of the prototype of the analogue hadronic calorimeter for the ILC's ILD detector. They had all worked on this project as summer students.

Test beam season has started again. Two potential prototypes for future ILC detectors are being tested in a beamline at CERN that delivers hadrons from the proton synchrotron, CERN’s workhorse accelerator. The CALICE collaboration is looking forward to getting its hands on the fresh test beam data.

The Compact Linear Collider and International Linear Collider will accelerate particles and create collisions in different ways. Nonetheless, the detector concepts under development share many commonalities.

Three detector R&D collaborations working on tomorrow's pixel detectors for charged particles joined forces in a combined test in a beam of particles. With the successful read-out of the three devices in a single data acquisition, they reach another milestone of the EU-sponsored AIDA Project. Work continues towards a more versatile telescope infrastructure to be made available to a broad user community.
