Among the LCC collaboration changes that will be put in place as of January 2017 will be the abolition of the Regional Directors. In this week’s corner, Brian Foster, soon-to-be former-European Director, explains what he has learned in 14 years of dedication towards managing the linear collider project, and gives some advice for the future.

The International Large Detector (ILD) is one of two detector concepts which are under study for the International Linear Collider. ILD started about ten years ago with the merger of two different concept groups. The concept group developed a detector design which was documented in the ILC’s Technical Design Report TDR. Over the past few months ILD has given itself a new structure, to address the future challenges of the ILC project.

A long-standing issue that had kept civil engineers and accelerator developers busy has now been resolved: the design option of the loaf-shaped Kamaboko tunnel will have a separating wall of 1.5 metres.

The ILC Progress Report is a document outlining the technical progress after the publication of the Technical Design Report (TDR) in 2013. It contains the information regarding the progress in civil engineering studies, accelerator hardware design/development updates, accelerator system layout updates, integration/test facilities to be prepared for “hub-laboratory functioning, and updated project implementation plan, and further preparatory work.

As is appropriate for an anniversary issue, this week's Director's Corner is authored by Barry Barish, who led the project from its conception in 2005 through major milestones up to the publication of the Technical Design report in 2013 and the formation of the Linear Collider Collaboration. He looks back at past achievements and advises the linear community to remain very, very patient.

The physics case of the ILC boils down to three main points, says Hitoshi Yamamoto, Director for Physics and Detectors in the Linear Collider Collaboration. A physics case is a scientific justification based on studies and theory. And while the case for the linear collider has been made many times, the LC physics community thinks that it is now much clearer.

Today we are proud to present part three: the summary of the Americas event that took place at Fermilab and culminated in the handing over of a gift-wrapped set of the report from Barry Barish to Pier Oddone. The nature of a worldwide event happening consecutively in three regions of world is that people can only attend one of the three. So when celebrations ended in Japan and started in Europe, a video of the Asian event showed the participants in Europe what had happened during the day. Likewise, when Europe handed over the Americas, a summary video showed the key moments of both the Asian and the European celebrations. Watch these videos here.
