The organisers arranged a special “Tokyo Event”, to highlight the benefits of the ILC to Japanese society. More than 400 politicians, industry, media and workshop participants heard about the Tokyo Statement, Japanese demographics and followed a panel discussion that included the claim that physicists come across as ignorant. Mike Harrison sums up his impressions.

An alternative technology for the ILD detector’s TPC tracker shows good results in a test beam at DESY. While the Large Hadron Collider saw its first circulating protons since many months, a detector technology for the time projection chamber of a future ILC detector saw some 1.5 million events in one week. Due to its specific technology, it probably has more channels than any other TPC so far.

Two years after the team in the CERN Control Centre switched off the beams in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) on 14 February 2013 the LHC is set to start up again at the end of March. Hundreds of engineers and technicians have been repairing and strengthening the laboratory's accelerators and experiments in preparation for running the LHC at the higher energy. So what has the work achieved?

The CLIC annual workshop, held at CERN from 26 to 30 January, did not only bring together nearly accelerator and detector experts to discuss the next stages of the project – it also featured a session on possible applications from CLIC technology, which drew experts from other fields such as light sources, medical research and industry. Good news for detector developers in Europe: the AIDA-2020 proposal to the European Commission has been selected to be funded as part of the Horizon 2020 programme. This means that future projects needing state-of-the-art particle detectors like the Large Hadron Collider upgrade and the linear collider will receive a total of ten million euros funding over the next four years. Thirty-eight participants from all across Europe take part in AIDA2020, including CERN as coordinating institute, making it the largest European detector R&D project.

The mayor of Ichinoseki city, Osamu Katsube, and the whole city sent a special gift to CERN for its for its 60th birthday, which it celebrated in 2014: a red chanchanko set. It consists of a red vest, hat and folding fan. "'Kanreki' is one of the ancient traditions of celebrating longevity. It is held to celebrate the long life and health of someone who has reached a certain age and to pray for their continued health. This age is 60 years," the mayor explains in the accompanying letter. "We wish CERN further progress with its motto 'Science for Peace'." Find out more about the tradition

CERN and the Japanese high-energy accelerator research laboratory KEK have a long history of collaboration. An agreement signed at KEK on 21 November puts this on even firmer ground: both labs will establish CERN-KEK offices to increase the collaborative effort on accelerator R&D and construction projects of mutual interest.

Four consecutive generations of former DESY summer students had an unplanned reunion at CERN recently: they were all around for the test of of the prototype of the analogue hadronic calorimeter for the ILC's ILD detector. They had all worked on this project as summer students.

Takuya Tasso, Governor of Iwate Prefecture in Japan, visited CERN on 10 November. He wanted to see CERN's activities as a laboratory at the frontier of particle physics and its contribution to world-wide science and education, as well as learn about its social impact.

Test beam season has started again. Two potential prototypes for future ILC detectors are being tested in a beamline at CERN that delivers hadrons from the proton synchrotron, CERN’s workhorse accelerator. The CALICE collaboration is looking forward to getting its hands on the fresh test beam data.
